Why BlackSwan?
At first glance, you may be wondering why we chose to name our hospitality collective after a bird—and it’s a fair question. While we appreciated Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and Natalie Portman’s unforgettable performance, our inspiration stems from a much older, more meaningful origin.
Before 1697, the term “black swan” was commonly used in the Old World to describe something impossible—an event so improbable, it was believed not to exist. That is, until explorers in Australia discovered actual black swans, disproving centuries of assumptions in an instant. What was once thought impossible had been found.
Fast forward to the modern era, when scholar and author Nassim Nicholas Taleb published The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, introducing a theory that would forever shift how we understand unpredictability, disruption, and innovation. A “Black Swan event,” by Taleb’s definition, possesses three distinct traits: it is rare, it carries a profound impact, and it is only explainable in hindsight.
So, what does all of this have to do with hospitality?
In an industry often ruled by trends and repetition, true success comes not from following a formula—but from defying it. As Taleb explains, if the "secret recipe" for a successful restaurant were obvious, it would already be widely replicated, rendering it ordinary. Instead, the next breakthrough in hospitality must come from beyond conventional thinking—something unexpected, unprecedented, and difficult to predict.
